1. Introduction

 Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gases that has an effect on the Earth's temperature. Greenhouse gases effect is part of the atmosphere. The atmosphere is the entire gas that covers and wraps the Earth; the atmosphere contains more than 4 different gases. Scientists had said that carbon dioxide traps heat, therefore classifying it as a greenhouse gas.(all greenhouse gases, water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide, traps heat). With an increase of carbon dioxide mean more greenhouse gases, which will trap more heat and thus increasing Earth’s temperature.

At room temperatures (20-25 oC), carbon dioxide is an odourless, colourless gas, which is faintly acidic and non-flammable. (Lenntech Water treatment & purification, 2009)


 Humans use carbon dioxide in many different ways. The most familiar example is its use in soft drinks and beer, to make them fizzy. Carbon dioxide released by baking powder or yeast makes cake batter rise. (Lenntech Water treatment & purification, 2009) Hence, we use Coke for our experiment as it contains carbon dioxide. By capturing and sealing the carbon dioxide inside the bio-chamber, we can measure the amount of carbon dioxide inside the bio-chamber and hence measure the temperature of different concentration of carbon dioxide to prove our hypothesis, as stated in the next page.

 Due to human activities, the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere has been rising extensively during the last 150 years. As a result, it has exceeded the amount sequestered in biomass, the oceans, and other sinks. (Lenntech Water treatment & purification, 2009) The amount of carbon dioxide increased 84 ppm in just 184 years. This is proven to happen because of human activities such as  burning fossil fuels, producing cement, land clearing and forest combustion etc. Almost 22% of the carbon dioxide in the current atmosphere is caused by human activities.

 A higher concentration of carbon dioxide will result in an increase in the temperature of its surrounding air. Many people believe what scientists say: carbon dioxide causes an increase in temperature of the Earth, but is it true?

By succeeding in this experiment, we can justify the statements that the scientists claimed is true. carbon dioxide produced stays in the air and increases  the concentration of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. If the hypothesis is correct, we can prove that what the scientists had claimed is true.

The scientist has said that greenhouse gases traps heat and cause the temperature to increase. Carbon dioxide is considered a greenhouse gas and thus, we think that a higher concentration of carbon dioxide will result in an increase in the temperature of its surrounding air. We want to justify the statements that the scientists claimed is true. The carbon dioxide produced by vehicles stay in the air and increase in the concentration of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby causing a rise in temperature, which traps the heat, hence resulting in global warming on Earth. We are to change the amount of carbon dioxide in the soda bottle, thereby collecting the results of the temperature of the air in the Coke bottle. We are to control the place of the set-up, the temperature of the surrounding air and the amount of time the experiment was set-up. Hence, to change our hypothesis to match our results, our new hypothesis is the stronger the concentration of carbon dioxide, the higher the temperature in the Coke bottle, however, when the carbon dioxide is diffused, the temperature will not decrease.
